Free llms.txt generator and validator
This free tool builds an llms.txt file for your website from a short form. It can also check an existing llms.txt file against the format set out in the proposal.
Build an llms.txt
Everything stays in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.
# Your business name
> One sentence on what you do and where.
## Key pages
- [Home](https://yourbusiness.co.uk/): Home page
Fill in the details and your file appears here as you type.
Save it as a plain text file called llms.txt so it opens at yourbusiness.co.uk/llms.txt, then check it below.
Check your llms.txt
We read the file at /llms.txt on your site and check it against the llmstxt.org format.
Use the builder above to start a new file, and see the llms.txt guide for where it goes on common site builders. llms.txt is one small part of being readable by AI; the free check looks at the rest.
What llms.txt is
llms.txt is a plain text file written in Markdown. Markdown is a simple way to format text using symbols such as # for headings and - for list items. The idea is to give large language models (LLMs), the systems behind AI tools, a short and tidy guide to your site.
The file offers brief background about your business, some guidance, and links to pages with more detail. A sitemap lists every page for search engines. llms.txt is different: it is a hand-picked overview.
It is not only for software documentation. The proposal gives the example of a business outlining its structure and policies.
Where it lives
The file is called llms.txt. It usually sits at the root of your site, for example yoursite.co.uk/llms.txt. It can also sit in a sub-folder, where it covers the pages under that folder. If more than one file applies, AI agents should use the most specific one.
What goes in the file
The format is Markdown, but it follows set rules, so software can read it reliably. In order:
- A title (H1 heading). The name of your business or site. This is the only part you must include.
- A short summary in a blockquote. A blockquote is a line starting with
>. It holds the key facts someone needs to understand the rest of the file. - Optional detail. Paragraphs or lists with more information. No headings in this part.
- Optional link lists under H2 headings. Each item is a Markdown link written as
[name](url). You can add a colon and a short note after the link. - An “Optional” section, if you want one. By convention, this holds less important links that an AI agent can skip when it needs a shorter version.
The generator puts these parts in the right order for you. The validator flags anything that does not match, such as a missing title.
Tips for a useful file
- Keep the wording short and clear.
- Keep link descriptions brief.
- Avoid jargon.
- Test the file. Give an AI tool only your llms.txt and ask it questions about your business.
An honest note
llms.txt is a proposal, and the specification is still open for community input. It is not an agreed standard. We cannot promise that any AI tool will read your file or use it. Think of it as a low-effort, tidy summary of your site, not a switch that changes how AI tools treat you.
How it fits with robots.txt
robots.txt tells automated tools which parts of your site they may access. llms.txt does a different job. It is a guide an AI agent can use when it needs information about you. You may want both.
Check the rest of your site
llms.txt is one small piece. Our free check looks at your homepage and gives you a score out of 100 and your top three issues. It takes about 10 seconds and needs no sign-up. It checks for an llms.txt file, plus robots.txt rules for each AI crawler, HTTPS, your sitemap and more.
If you want more, the full report costs £39, one-off, and includes an llms.txt draft with the other fixes.
Questions
Where should I put my llms.txt file?
Usually at the root of your site, so it opens at yoursite.co.uk/llms.txt. It can also sit in a sub-folder, where it covers the pages under that folder.
What is the minimum an llms.txt file needs?
Only a title: an H1 heading with the name of your business or site. A short summary and link lists are optional but useful.
Will ChatGPT or other AI tools read my llms.txt?
We can't promise that. llms.txt is a proposal, and the specification is still open for community input. It is not an agreed standard that every AI tool follows.
Is llms.txt the same as robots.txt?
No. robots.txt tells automated tools which parts of your site they may access. llms.txt is a short guide to your site that an AI agent can use when it needs information.
Is llms.txt the same as a sitemap?
No. A sitemap lists every page for search engines. llms.txt is a short, hand-picked overview for AI tools.
How can I test my file?
The proposal suggests giving an AI tool only your llms.txt and asking it questions about your business. If the answers are poor, make the summary and link notes clearer.
