How to set page titles and descriptions for AI search

What the problem is

Each page has a title (shown in the browser tab and search results), a meta description (the short summary under it), and a main heading on the page itself (the H1). We also check that the page states its language and has a canonical link (the page's preferred address).

We flag a missing title or description, a title outside 10–65 characters, a description outside 50–160 characters, and pages with no main heading or more than one.

Why it matters for AI search

These are the first things search engines and AI tools read to work out what a page is about. A clear title and description that say what you do and where make it easier for them to summarise and cite the page accurately.

How to fix it

  1. Title: say what you do and where, then your business name, for example “Emergency plumber in Bristol | Smith & Sons”.
  2. Description: one or two plain sentences on what you offer, where, and why someone should choose you.
  3. Use one main heading (H1) per page that says what the page is about. Use smaller headings for sections.
  4. Give every page its own title and description, not the same text copied across pages.

On your site builder

Wix

  • In the editor, open the page's settings and use the SEO basics tab to set the title and description. Set the main heading by choosing the H1 text style for one heading on the page.

Squarespace

  • Open the page's settings and use the SEO tab for the title and description. Use Heading 1 for one main heading on the page.

WordPress

  • With an SEO plugin such as Yoast SEO or Rank Math, set the title and description in the plugin's box when editing each page. The page or post title is usually the H1.

Shopify

  • For the homepage: Online Store → Preferences → title and meta description.
  • For other pages, products and collections: the “Search engine listing” section at the bottom of each editor.

Menus change from time to time. If a setting has moved, your site builder's help pages will have the current steps.
