How to remove “noindex” from your homepage
What the problem is
A robots meta tag with noindex (or none) tells search engines not to include the page in their results. It's often switched on by a “hide from search engines” setting, sometimes left on by mistake after a site was built.
Why it matters for AI search
Many AI search tools find pages through search indexes such as Google's and Bing's. A homepage marked noindex is left out of those indexes, so it's much less likely to be found or cited.
How to fix it
- Find the setting that hides the page or the whole site from search engines, and turn it off.
- If a developer built the site, ask them to remove
noindexfrom the homepage's robots meta tag.
On your site builder
Wix
- In the editor, open the homepage's SEO settings and make sure “Let search engines index this page” is on. Also check your site-wide SEO settings in the dashboard allow indexing.
Squarespace
- Open the homepage's settings and, on the SEO tab, make sure the page isn't hidden from search results. In Settings → Crawlers, make sure search engine crawlers aren't blocked.
WordPress
- Go to Settings → Reading and untick “Discourage search engines from indexing this site”. If you use an SEO plugin, check the homepage's advanced settings allow it to be shown in search results.
Menus change from time to time. If a setting has moved, your site builder's help pages will have the current steps.
